I just bought a 18.5 1990 Hunter and it needs an outboard. I just down sized from a 36' to a 27' and now to a 18' and this is the first outboard I ever had to buy and use. I will be using this boat only on the river and a couple trips on the Chesapeake bay. I have been looking around and am sure I need around 5HP and want a new 4 stroke engine , but I am not sure what type to go with and where to buy it?? Please Help

OB Motor

I have a nearly new Tahatsu, 5hp, 2cycle outboard motor for sale. It is a 2000 year engine. It has less than two tanks of fuel thru it. I sold my dinghy and the buyer already had an OB engine like mine. Will sell for 475.00. Firm. Enjoy your day!!! Roy 1-252-633-3629 I think it was $1050.00 new?

Outboard

Ken - After the question of which marine sealant to use on your decks, outboards seem to be the most likely to spark heated coversation - so I'll throw my two cents in and run. :) Lots of people love 4 strokes. Quieter, cleaner, more fuel efficient. Personally - in this range I just see them as heavy. In a larger engine such as on our Grady White if I were to repower it would be only to a 4 stroke for effeciency. In that class the relative weight difference is fairly small. In the class of engine you are describing, the relative weight difference is much bigger. I think the added weight is enough to make the engine unwieldy to move and can adversly affect sailing characteristics by making the aft end of the boat more heavy than intended and by inducing a list. Since you will presumably use the engine a small percentage of the time I don't think the fuel effeciency issue is as great. I repowered my C25 last summer and chose to use a Johnson 8hp extra long-shaft. I burn about a half gallon an hour at 5 and half knots. For the way I use my boat that's fine. As always, your milaage may varry - literally this time. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

2 vs. 4 stroke

Overall, I agree with Justin; with small outboards, the mechanical advantages of the four stroke tend to become literally outweighed because they are so much heavier (relatively) than their 2 stroke counterparts. Of course, if you want a four stroke because it is quieter, or because you don't have to mix the fuel, or because it pollutes less than the two stroke, that's a different story. If you do decide to go with a four stroke, remember to make sure that your motor mount is rated to carry a four stroke. The four stroke is not only heavier, it generates more torque, and the mount must be able to handle the loads. The flip side is that the extra torque may mean you can get away with a lower hp four stroke.

5 HP?

Ken, A 5 Horse motor may be a little larger than you need... I used a 5 HP on my Hunter 23 and it was really more than enough power. There are smaller 4-stroke motors out there that may be cheaper and lighter in the long run. I think Honda produces a 4HP and a 2HP four stroke, and one of these may be more suited for your purposes. --JDB

excellent brand of engine but have been having problems with the aluminum on the bottom drive suffering from electrolisis despite all protection paints are good usage and maintenance. apparently the '89 we bought with our boat - 8hp - was at the time when the japenese were using softer aluminium, perhaps for economy. the boat originally came from a hunter dealer with this outboard, so pricing was the dealers perogrative. check around before purchase re electrolisis problems and also bear in mind that the lower outdrive is not of softer aluminium. difficult perhaps to see easily. contacts/friends and boat yards will be able to advise. hope this helps. heard of excellent paint that will stop problem and solve it - cannot remember name briefly. ted.

Roys Tohatsu

Thanks for the offer Roy but I need a long shaft acording to Hunter and I think I want to start out with a new OB or at least the correct size.

Tohatsu Motors

We have an 86 O'Day 222 that came with a Tohatsu 8hp of undetermined age. The motor was not well maintained and we have had problems with the low idle jet plugging up. Thinking of having the carb replaced. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
