The friction brake on my outboard isn't working properly anymore. If I let go of the handle, the motor slowly rotates counterclockwise (a propwalk thing I suppose) even with the friction brake screwed in as hard as I can get it. Of course, this is guaranteed to happen in tight maneuvres such as docking. Does anyone have up their sleeves a trick for locking an outboard into a fixed position? Thanks. Dick

REPACK WITH GREASE

There is most likely a grease nipple...get a grease gun and fill it with grease until u see it ooze... your problem will be resolved (most likely---had this prob on a few outboards) Ed

One possibility.

It's hard to describe, but on my 5hp Nissan there's a little 1x1 inch square piece of metal that has to be held in place when the lower unit is put back together. The friction screw tightens that piece of metal against the shaft to keep the motor from turning. When I put my unit back together, the piece slipped down and the motor wouldn't hold in place no matter how hard I tightened it. I had to take it apart and try again. I don't think that piece can slip down unless someone has taken the lower unit apart. Good luck, Mac

friction blocks

What happens with a lot of them is the screw gets pushed into the block and doesn't actualy create any pressure Most of the ones I've had problems with I pull the block and cut a small block of steel that fits over the block, then glue it on, most times it requires sanding or filing the block down by an amount equal to the thickness of the steel. Also, if you drill a small socket in the steel for the end of the screw, )not all the way through the steel of course!) it will be self locating and won't easily slip out. ken.
