I use my Johnson 8 h.p. 2 stroke outboard in salt water, every week, to take my h26 into the bay for a day's saioling. I flush the engine after each use with fresh water. I being too cautious? The Johnson company does not make the flushing process easy and convenient. David King

Hi David, I would probably do the same thing...

not so good to let an outboard sit for long periods after salt water use, IMHO. During our two month cruise this past season our dink motor got used just about every day, so I did not flush until returning to home port. All I do, with it hanging on the rail, is to stick the lower part of the motor and prop into a bucket of fresh water and let it run for a few minutes. Terry

Outboard fresh water flush

David, I also rinse my motor (3.5hp 2 stroke) in fresh water after ocean use. I put the motor on the stand on my push pit, then tie a 5 gal bucket under the motor, and fill with fresh water - then run engine to flush. Your engine probably is configured so you can use 'ear muffs', but not my small motor. I am now thinking of using 'Salt Away' in the water to better get the salt out. Michael

Never have

My boat sits in salt water, actually brackish water but all the same, and no one at the marina seems to flush there outboard after use, never had any problems!

Flushing access

David, I think you will find a screw beneath the motor cowling that removes to provide access for a flushing nipple. I think it's a half inch screw. Check your manual or dealer to confirm its locaton. You'll need to get the male part to screw into this area. Attach a garden hose and run water for several minutes after each use. I have a Tohatsu which I think is the same as a Nissan. I'm from the school that feels preventative cleaning after every use will prolong the life of these motors. John Richard
