Outboard for Venture 25

I am stuck!!!! Just got a 1976 Venture 25 (Love it!!) but I am unclear exactly what type of motor to buy for it.

Do I have to have a Long shaft or will a short shaft work for this particular model?

Any help is appreciated as I don't want to shell out a ton of cash for a motor I cannot use.

measure the area from where you bolt the motor on the bracket to the water that will help you figure it out A short shaft is 15 " A long shaft is 20" most but not all sailboats take a long shaft

Hi, I also have a V25 and use a 9.9 longshaft. A short shaft might work, if your motor mount's lowering travel is enough or if it is mounted lower on the transom. Both of these scenarios would have you leaning further over the transom when you lower/raise the motor. I would stick with a long shaft.

You are lucky in that the Mac 25 is so lightweight that a 7.5 is more than adequate. Some of us need the 9.9 more. I would suppose the Mac 25 will plane on 7.5 :)

Extra long shaft?

I don't know about the 25, but I have a Mac 26C and an extra long shaft (25") Evinrude Sailmaster motor. I don't have a drop down mount. My motor mounts on the transom and tilts up while sailing. I have been in moderate seas where the motor was only in the water about 20% of the time. I needed to get upwind and I was glad I had any propulsion. When I finally do upgrade to a four stroke I plan to look for another 25". I posted a photo to show how far below the waterline my prop is. Ignore the propeller marks on the rudder, I put them there on purpose for decoration :Liar:.

We use to own a V25 and had an 8 HP long shaft which worked well. I do not think you would want to try a short shaft. Anything in the 8 to 10 HP range would be fine.

Short shaft will not work. A long shaft is good but an extra long shaft is better especially in high swells.

Even my long shaft Honda 7.5 comes out of the water in swells.......my vote is for.... longer the better ;-)
