Outboard for an O'Day 192

O'Day 192 Muskegon Lake, MI.
I have a 1986 O'Day 192 that I sail on inland lakes. The winds on these lakes can gust to 25 knts at times. What is an appropriate horsepower for an outboard?
If I go with a 4 stroke, which is heavier, do I need to reinforce the transom ?

It seems like 5-6 HP is normal outboard size for most 192s, 4 HP could work, but 5-6 will provide that slight added OOMPH that you may need is winds and will usually have more features (full gear-shift, remote fuel tank, battery-charging coil possible) for not much more weight (I think many 5 or 6 hp 4-strokes are same engine as 4 hp from same maker). Over 6 HP isn't really going to add any more usable power since boat can't exceed hull-speed (1.34 x sq root of waterline).

An average 5-6 HP should not require any change to transom reinforcement, but if the particular outboard were on hte heavy side it would be advisable to take it off the bracket while trailering.

Mine does fine with a 5hp Nissan 4 stroke. She pushes at hull speed, with I believe the stock propeller. Yesterday I saw windspeeds up to 17knots at the end of my dock, and Windfinder reported gusts at 21knots during the same time period I was measuring, so that sounds about right. The boat pushes into that fine. Any windier than that, and I generally won't be heading out.

My boat has the original Garelick aluminum motor bracket. I don't see any problems with it, but I would not tow the boat any distances with the motor on the bracket.

If you wanted to replace the bracket, the SS Garhauer bracket they put on the new Sage 17s looks very nice. (Just saw at Annapolis show Thursday...) I don't know if Garhauer sells it retail, though, because it's not on their site catalog...
