Same as me
I repowered my '79 Oday 23 a few years ago. I went with an 8 hp two stroke Nissan, electric start long shaft model. Great engine. You need a long shaft model. The 20" length is the "standard" long shaft. One or two manufacturers offer a 25" model. If the engine you like is available as a 25", definitely go for it. You won't regret it. I tried to find one a few years ago, and I don't think they were available except as a special order.Moving from a two stroke to a four stroke engine is a great upgrade: less noise, better fuel economy, less pollution. However, note that a four stroke generates a lot more torque than an equivalent hp two stroke, so the mounting bracket must specifically be rated to handle a four stroke. It's not just the weight differential between two and four that is important in determining if your existing bracket can handle things. For me, I decided to go with the two stroke. It was significantly lighter than the four stroke, making it easier for the Admiral to raise and lower, it was a lot less expensive, and it didn't require modifying my existing mounting bracket or the transom block. I console my environmental self with the knowledge that while it is not as clean as a four stroke, it is much cleaner than the 1981 model it replaced.
