Outboard engine sizes and makes

Hello all, hope everyone's getting their winter fix-it lists knocked out. After leaving my boat on the bouey for a month (not recommended), I returned to find my 2008 mercury 9.9 hp four stroke outboard stolen. I'm now in the process of replacing it and have a few questions. What is the best size motor for the Oday 25 shallow keel/center board? The 9.9 had more than enough power, are the 6 or 8 hp adequate? And does anyone have recommendations on the brand? I loved the merc but don't really want to pay the premium if there are other equally reliable engines. Thanks for your help,

Sorry about your engine. I also have a Mercury ( 1993 2cycle) on my 25. A n extra long shaft 8 should work just fine. I seldom run at more than half throttle with the 9.9. Try Fold-a-boat in the northwest, Oregon I think. The sell Tohatsu and Suzuki at rock bottom prices. My old Erricson 35 did very well on 24 HP and it weighed about 14,000 lbs. That's 584 lbs per HP An Oday 25 is 4800 lbs. and with 8 HP, thats 600 lbs per HP. A 9.9 is 480 lbs per HP but I think an 8 would do it. Try to get an extra long shaft. Ernie

I have an 8 horse electric start Tohatsu on an Oday 240. Displacement on this boat is 3600 lbs. Motor will propel me in excess of theoretical hull speed to windward at full throttle. At 2/3s throttle we do 5+ knots and use under 1 liter of fuel per hour. It is relatively quiet and also charges my battery. I am told the 10 horse Tohatsu is the same engine with a different head.

I previously owned a C&C Redline 25 displacement 4200 lbs with a 6hp Nissan. This worked well for getting in and out of the harbour and would produce about 4.5 knots to windward in a chop. It was a single cylinder and vibrated a bit. I now prefer twins.
