We're docked in the southern end of the SF Bay and frequently sail to the Northern regions of the SF Bay. We currently own a 1976 cal 2-27 with the original Ferryman Diesel that needs to be replaced. We are considering replacing the Ferryman with a 9.9 or 15 hp outboard engine with electric start and remote. Has anyone done this or know someone who has who could answer the following questions:
1. Is the 9.9 adequate to cruise under power for 4 - 5 hours at a time into a wind and small chop or would a 15hp be required?
2. Would we need to stiffen the transom for a 9.9 (93 lbs) or a 15 (139 lbs)? If so, what do you recommend?
3. Should the engine be center-mounted or can it be offset?
4. Long shaft or short shaft?
