My Honda 9.9 Outboard does not pump water when I first start it. But when I bump the throttle up just a tad (still in neutral) from idle it picks up water and pumps like a champ. I can then back the throttle back down to idle and it continues to pump water AOK. Is this the start of impellar problems? Any ideas?? thanks.. Ted

Did it before?

My Honda owners manual says that some models don't send water out the telltale until the thermostat opens. My Honda 8 HP wasn't sending out water at all this spring when I first started it up. I removed the thermostat and found it to be completely clogged with salt. Paul

Yes

I would check the impeller right away,I suspect it`s worn,or hardened with age, good luck Cecil

thermostat

The Honda engines have a thermostat in them that will just cirtulate the water around the cylinders until it warms enough to open the thermostat. If the water is cold there will be no outflow until it warms up.If the engine overheats look for a mud dabber nest in the output, I had this happen.

It is actually recommended to change water

pump impellers yearly on early model Honda 9.9 motors. By that I understand it to be up through 1990. I do not know about later years as mine is in the early bunch. I check mine yearly and replace it every second year regardless. The impellers can become brittle and break as well as wear out. The shop manual is about $20 and anyone can do this using the book, and without problems. Very cheap insurance. Ray S/V Speedy

thermostat?

I have read the responses about a thermostat keeping the water from coming out the check hole. This has not been my experience on our newer model Honda 9.9 4-stroke, and water came streaming out at start up every time. It sounds like you are still getting good flow if the water eventually comes out strong. After running for a while, it the temp of the water acceptable? (You're not overheating are you?) On my old Johnson, I had to clean out the salt/crud in that check line periodically. Whenever the flow became weak, before going after the impeller, I would first get the WD-40 and using the little straw spray a few good shots backwards down the check hole. 90% of the time this freed up / cleared whatever was blocking the flow, and it was fine again. So, before taking it apart, you might try the WD-40. In any case, if the impellor is years old, its worth changing. Let us know what you find out-

outlet partially blocked

Thanks guys for your responses. I checked the outlet as recommended and found it partially blocked. I cleared it and now it pumps as soon as I crank it. Yea!! While I have the attention of other Honda owners I have another question. Does it hurt to run this 4 stroke 9.9 continuesly for 4 to 5 hours? I cruised up to Cumberisland Ga. last year and had to motor the whole way up on my Honda 9.9 It ran like a champ and never had a lick of trouble out of it. I would like to make the same trip again this year. I am just concerned that I am pushsing this engine beyond what it was designed for. I even thought of getting a 15 hp. Your thoughts???? Ted

Have run for 10-12 hrs.

Ted: We had a H'25 with a 9.9hp engine on it back in the late 70's. We have motored for 10-12 hrs at a time without any problem. These motors are about as reliable as they get. Check your oil upper/lower and use fresh gas and they will last longer than the boat. Oh, and be sure that they are pumping water!<g>
