my boat has a lot of freeboard, which makes it difficult to control an outboard. currently I am using a tiller extension (which is less than satisfactory) and bend over the transom to shift from forward to reverse, or vice versa (even more less than satisfactory.) does anyone have any good contol ideas to take some of the awkwardness out of this simple operation. how do you do it?

Ron, I don't like anything attached
to the tiller but the rudder. Check with your engine manufacturer to see if there is a remote contronl unit available. You can install it in the cockpit.

thanks, actually I was thinking in that direction as, just wondered if there was some gizmo that I didn't know about, I had cockpit controls, and unless I want to cut another hole they were no more convenient than leaning over the transom. I want to keep everything as simple as possible with minimal maintenance. I'm not lazy, just like to keep the moving parts to a minimum. tks again for your reply

That looks simple yet effective Mac, sent you picture off to friends with small yachts. I did meet a Canadian, he was in the next slip, with an arrangement with 3/8 line, a couple of blocks (directional, cheek I think) with two cam-cleats on his tiller.This system, he demonstrated it, steered his outboard while he steered the tiller, one with the other. This was a 30 ft sailboat he sailed from Canada and had used this system for several years around Mexico. His inboard had gone bad and he'd give it the 'float' test. I can't remember if he had used the system coming FROM Canada, but it seemed to work well and he swore by it. This was in La Paz last year.
