Anybody know the weight capacity of the factory installed outboard bracket on the '87 h23, I've got a 6hp Evinrude I was going to put on in place of my 5hp Nissan but it's a little heavier and I can't seem to find anything about it in the archives. Thanks in advance. Dave h23 "Wind Dreamer"

8 hp Nissan with no problem

My 8hp Nissan weighs 60 lb. I once towed another H23 about 2 miles in 25 kt winds after it had been disabled and the factory motor mount held up fine. I don't know of anybody who has actually broken one, but they flex and crack quite a bit and several people I know have replaced them. I have a tagline from my outboard to the upper rudder pintle just in case my factory mount breaks. I don't want to lose the motor. I also have a Garelick mount ready to bolt on in case I ever need a replacement. Your 6 hp Mercury should be fine but if you're feeling uneasy attach a tagline and get a replacement mount ready. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

9.9 Evinrude - need a new bracket

I just bought a 1986 Hunter 23 - I had to replace the 5 HP motor and the one I found was a nice 1981 electric start/charging 9.9 HP Evinrude. I contacted Hunter about the "specs" on the motor bracket and they said, "rated to 10 HP". I attached my motor, but it looks really precarious. I'm replacing the bracket with a higher rated Garelick mount. Chris H23 - no name yet

Backing Plate

My H23 has a pretty stout ss plate inside the transom that the motor mount is through-bolted to. Not sure if that is a stock setup or added by PO. Anyway, it holds my old 4 stroke Honda 7.5, which must weight in the 75 to 80 lb. range with no noticeable flexing. I've also carefully stepped from my truck bumper to the part of the mount close to the transom and up into the cockpit with no ill effects. I'm not a small person.

reinforce the transom

the original mount was cast out of fiberglass.. want one? I have.. err.. don't have one..(it went out with last weeks trash) We put a garlick for 12 hp and 14" lift on ours. inside the transom a big as possible peice of 3/4 plywood and an aluminim plate. Also we epoxied white oak on the bottom and installed alum angle with brackets from the bottom of the plate to the oak with 3/8 bolts. Overkill? maybe! but the 9.9 merc doesn't flex the transom at all now! good luck! Denise

Original Nissan 5HP trait?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's "normal" for the OEM Nissan 5HP outboard to come out of the water when you rev it in reverse? I overdid the throttle one day and the motor tilted forward bringing the prop out of the water. I took the motor home and put it in a test barrel. It appears that the only time the motor is locked down is when it's in Forward mode. I wonder because, at least in the test barrel, it took very little throttle in reverse to make the engine start tilting forward. Is this typical of all small outboards? Thanks in advance!

Nissan made a fix

My 2004 Nissan 6 HP 4-stroke locks in the downward position and requires pushing a relese lever to raise it out of the water. My original two stroke would jump out of the water at sudden increases in RPM when in reverse. Don't know if the locking mechanism was designed to fix this problem or not, but I have concerns about what might happen when encountering an underwater object or shallow water.

Hmmm

Thanks for the reply Arturo! I'm pretty sure it's the way it's designed, but I'm not crazy about it. I think it's meant to prevent you from going too fast in reverse, but sometimes you just need a quick push in the opposite direction.
