Outboard Bracket

I have a 1983 O'Day 25 and need to replace the bracket because the springs no longer function. I want to find a bracket that will match the holes on the wedge between the bracket and transom.
HELP!

That's not so important, 'cuz the holes can be patched. What you should be looking for a is GOOD design. May folks use Garelick, but IIRC, many forums have mentioned that the Garhauer bracket is better.

I just replaced mine with the garelick. I completely removed the wedge and rotated the top of the mount so that I could adjust the motor level. I put a 12x12 aluminum plate inside and outside. Works great

How did you get the wedge off?

The wedge is only bolted to the stern with the mounting bolts of the bracket. The bolts run through the wedge.

We just replaced my mount with a Garelich which stated it was good up to 15 HP 2 stroke and 105 lbs. . I'm was very disappointed, as when we mounted our 9.9 2 cycle, the springs did not even come close to making the engine liftable. They are much too weak for an engine this size. This after filling all the previous holes, and having to use threaded rod and new backing plates. I suggest making sure whatever mount you buy, it can handle at least 140 lbs. Our engine tips the scale at around 90 lbs. Four strokes are even heavier. It's a lot easier to push the engine down than having to lift it up. . We had to install a four part pulley system to lift the engine up on the bracket.

My wedge is pretty well stuck to the transom, it isn't coming off easily. Though I haven't spent a lot of energy in trying to remove it. I have no idea what is holding it on. For all I know it could just be caulking.

During decommissioning of a derelict Oday 25, I came across many parts that were very very sturdily held on with just caulk after the bolts and screws were removed (assuming 5200 or 4000)
Amazing how well it holds when you don't want it to...

I pried mine off with a couple of screwdrivers and a putty knife. It wasn't easy.

I thought the wedge is there to provide clearance beween the bracket handle and the stern. I looked at mine and no way would the handle clear the stern when raising the motor without the wedge in place. Since I want to replace the bracket and bolt the new one directly to the transom thus eliminating the wedge, I would like to know what bracket to use.

I have had the same issues with a 9.9 2 stroke 25" shaft. Very hard to lift and tilt out of the water. What solved my problem was to replace the pivot rods on the motor mount bracket with longer ones. Went to Home Depot got some ss helper springs and attached them to the longer rods. Every 3or 4 years I replaced the springs because or rust. Hope this helps.

I have an 8hp sailmaster long shaft and the springs are perfect. It is equally hard to push down as it is to pull up. The release handle is easy enough to operate, no problems. My biggest problem is trying to pull start it as low as it is and through the stern rail. I'm glad it still cranks good. On thing mentioned before, and I noticed it as well, is that the wedge not only corrects the stern angle up and down but left and right as well. When my motor is parallel with the boat, it is slightly turned in relation to the bracket. Doesn't bother me and doesn't seem to bother the boat, motor, or bracket. The whole deal is WAY more solid than any thing I could have bolted to the wedge.

The previous owner had a 15 hp 4 stroke Yamaha on the original mount, on the wedge. It was causing the transom to deform. I lowered the mount until the engine was well in the water and plated the inside and out with a piece of 12x12x1/4 aluminum. No deformation and no flexing under acceleration. I do however have a few extra holes in my boat that the plate did not cover. I'll get a picture next time I make it to the boat...might be two weeks.

Good point about the wedge correcting for the curve of the transom and keeping the OB square to the centerline. But, you just learn that "straight" with the tiller is not square with the bracket.

I think my request is a little off this subject, so I'll post a new thread, but since this thread has a lot of experienced people on this issue I'd like to request that you review my post regarding outboard motor mount as well. Thanks.

I'm in the process of applying a Garelich on our 272. Made a 3.75" wide wedge extension to support the bolt pattern. Hopefully the 9.9 (115#) Merc. 4 stroke 25" w power trim and tilt will clear the rudder and provide logical control from the helm?...

The wedge may not be strong enough due to the torque generated by the four stroke. The inside of the transom should also be reinforced.

Thanks,
I think I'll follow your advice and apply a 1/4" Alum. plate on the contoured wedge and inside the transom...

I'd like to try that solution for weak springs on my Garelick bracket. Would you have any pics of your setup using the helper springs ? Thanks....
