Outboard as an Inboard?

I bought this cruiser with a Mariner 15HP outboard mounted over a complicated lift mechanism. I have observed that many new boats are using diesels with saildrive but have not found anything on comparison performances (outboard/inboard(saildrive). I also read an idea on using an outboard as an inboard with the same principles as a saildrive. Is this possible and efficient? Thanks,

If it's a gas engine, you can't do it

Gas outboard engines don't have the necessary spark arresters and fuel system safeguards to be used in an enclosed engine room.

well in cockpit

I use to have polish build Carter 24T. It has a well in the cockpit covered with the plywood hatch. The bottom of this well (and bottom of the boat) was another hatch (steel) what you suppose to take out when you install the engine. It was easy to install deinstall the engine. I store engine in the lasaret when was racing. Your boats cockpit sole should be above water line at list 10", otherwise water will enter to the cockpit when sailing on the waves. Rebulding the boat this way very complicated and sometimes impossible - you can have some structural elements on the way of the well, or cockpit sole to low. I am not sure that I explaine it well here, tell me if you need any drawings. Eugene.
