Yep, I just ran through a UPS estimator and it comes to a "billable weight" of 163 lbs. That's the penalty they levy for oversize boxes. $140 looks about right, although you may see a little variance for different rate plans.

Have you tried the Post Office? They have standard sized boxes for good rates, don't know if yours'll fit their size or weight limits though.

Heck, why not take a "Road Trip!!!"

See if you can find a local dealer who will order it for you. If it ships as part of a full pallet the rate will be much better. The other approach is to install two tanks half size. I like divided water supplies anyway so that if one tank goes bad the other is still usable.

The post office will have limits on size. They have a little formula they use. Call them to be sure.
If I was going to ship the tank you are talking about,I would probably do it by freight. I have shipped 350 lbs, 48"x41"x49"tall, for $100 from South Texas to Ohio. Freight companies have minimum charges also.
There just isn't any competition in small package anymore. UPS, FedEx and the post office. And the post office is seriously downsizing so guess what will happen to prices when they get smaller. There are a million freight carriers, from one guy with his own truck to companies like Yellowtruck. They are on a network that can access the best price.

Shipping oversized parcels to a residential address always cost more. Try to calculate it shipping to your work address? I was going to buy a full sheet of King Starboard until I saw the shipping fees.

Try checking shipping by Greyhound. We just bought a dining room table on eBay and the seller shipped via Greyhound and it was a lot less than shipping via UPS, etc. The only downside is that they don't deliver door-to-door, you have to go to the nearest Greyhound bus terminal to pick it up. But if the cost is significantly less it might pay to try it.

Interesting. I used my FedEx Ship Manager software and got a price close to what you were quoted. What was interesting was that at first I declared the weight as 140 lbs and got near the same price as the 37 lb package. So I think you are getting a package freight price quote given the package size.

Beneteau makes their water tanks of fiberglass. They are molded to fit the hull and located low. I've also seen them custom built with foam core panels and marine ply, both epoxied.

If you are not in a hurry, place a request on Uship.com. When a shipper is bringing a boat/ trailer or other large shipment your way, shipper may include your package with the large load.

Here's one that's off the wall: Try posting a request on Craig's List, in the city where the tank is coming from. Some college kid who's driving to Florida might be happy to stick it in his trunk for $50, and it doesn't have value to anyone but you so there's not too much risk. I had a used car delivered doing exactly this and it worked out very well. There is some risk, though.

Check for a shipping company near you. Most businesses can ship an item via freight to a transfer company near you. All you have to do is go pick it up when it gets in.

If your boat is in a marina, check rates for shipping there. Will often be cheaper since it's a commercial address. (of course if marina wants to charge for that service you'd have to balance costs)

Yes, shipping costs have risen with the price of diesel fuel. For the past two years the unitary price of most items has risen according to their volume and weight. They still claim there is no inflation in the country.

That is a rather large tank. It will hold in excess of 100 gallons of water. Once filled up it will weigh in excess of 800 lbs and could seriously affect your boat balance. I would review my space requirements and needs before commiting to a tank that size.

Not Sure if this Still Works

We used to get great deals on shipping things as excess baggage through the arlines.

We'd buy a ticket from Hawaii to California and send a half dozen extra "bags". Somtimes we would even put a person in the seat that we bought the ticket for not always though.

That was long before the airlines started their stuff with charging for every bags so it probably will no longer work.

That won't work any more

Today, no baggage flies unless its owner has been checked into a seat...to prevent terrorists who don't want to die from checking bombs as luggage but not boarding. Then there are those pesky checked baggage fees...typically $25 for the first one, $35 for the second...not sure if they even allow more than 2. And there's a weight limit (50 lbs) for each bag...you can exceed it, but it costs you big bucks and a size limit that I THINK you can exceed, also for big bucks.

However, if the tank will fit in the overhead and he can get a cheap seat, it could go for free as carry on luggage...you get one piece plus a "personal item" (purse, laptop, briefcase) for no additional charge.

Flying used to be fun...but not any more!
