Out haul for Hunter 23.5 How is it set up?

Hi, We just purchases a 86 Hunter 23.5 and I had hooked up the sail outhaul on the boom with the rope that is on the starboard side of the boom and this was working fine but then I had to take the end of the boom off to see what the rope going down the center of the boom was for and found a pulley set up that looks like it is for a boom vang. Could someone tell me what this is for and how it is to be hooked up? I looked at it and could not figure it out even looked at all the boats at our marina and did not see another one like it. There is probably an easy answer and I'll feel pretty dumb after its explained. Any help would be appreciated. Outhaul

I've had my 23.5 for about 4 years now, it's a 1993 model, and has been a great boat for inland sailing. Concerning the lines in the boom, mine is set up with the outhaul in the middle, the topping lift on the starboard side and the reefing line on the port side. Mine lines are colored, with green for reefing, red for outhaul and blue for the topping lift. Have you discovered how much better the boat sails when reefed in 15 knots and higher? Sure will make your crew happier, with reasonable heel and no loss in speed. I have a friend that races a Catalina 22 at a different lake, and he is dying to get me to take the boat over there. Outhaul

Mine is a '86H23 as well. That pulley assembly in your boom is the outhaul; it's been a while since I've gotten into mine, but it's a 4:1 purchase I think...anyway, the other two lines either side are for topping lift and reefing. The purchase power of the outhaul is for sail adjustment under load. You'll get the hang of that, as well as the topping lift, but the most important one is the reef line...learn to reef on a nice, calm day, and practice it whenever you think about it. Like I said, it's been some time....I'd have to tear mine apart to get you the details, but I believe one block is attached inside the boom (on the mast end) with a through-bolt...anyway, the cable end rounds the shive to attach to the mainsail clew and as you haul it from the mast end the sail foot gets tighter. When rigging this tackle assembly be sure to not get obstructed by the mainsheet bail through bolt; I have found it easier to remove this while rigging. outhaul puchase? Topping lift?

I haven't looked inside the boom on my 95H23.5 but I thought all three lines in the boom just have sheaves at each end with no purchase to give mechanical advantage. I don't recall seeing any internal gear in the diagram in the manual either. Should there be? I know I don't get much movement pulling the outhaul that comes out the bottom of the boom at the mast.I'm also curious about stringing the topping lift through the boom. My boat was used and the topping lift was set up to round one of the sheaves at the aft end of the boom and go back up to a block and a clam cleat about 20 inches above the boom when the boom is horizontal. I can work it easily standing at the end of the boom but of course it's not so easy if the boom is far off the centerline.
