Is a 9.9 hp outboard (long shaft) the most common on Grampian 26?Bob Lay

9.9 for a G26. Of course

I have a g23 with a Sailmaster (Johnson) 8hp. One person with a g26 uses a 9.9. He is a dealer for Johnson etc. In short the 9.9 should work just fine for you...........Peter

Hi Bob,I understand the Grampian 26 (1970)I own came with a 2 stroke Sears 7 H.P. motor. The former owner replaced the OB with a Farymann Diesel. I have a 23' Hunter (1986) down in Florida that originally came with a 2 stroke Nissan 5 HP. I replaced it with a 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 HP. However, It required a new outboard bracket and beefing up of the transom to support the additional weight of the 4 stroke. The 4 stroke is a joy to operate. Great gas milage and very quiet. The Yamaha 9.9 is quite heavy. My question would be, will the transom of a Grampian be able to support the additional weight. I would be interested in hearing how you make out and what your final decision is.

G-26 Outboard

My 1973 G-26 has a heavy old Chrysler 10 hp mounted in the transom cutout. Standard engine - not a long shaft. No problem with weight. We mounted a rectangle of 12 ga. s/s sheet across the bottom of the transom cutout so the engine mounting bolts did not sit directly on the fibreglass.When running at full throttle we put in transom plugs to keep the cockpit floor dry.
