I have a 1979 30 hunter ,12 YSM yanmar it is always giving me trouble, loss of power, black smoke etc,I am considering a 15 horse outboard with electric start, remote control etc.I didnt do much Ocean travel just bay stuff and easy sailing etc.I have the boat 10 years and love the accommondation.

Try this

For a couple hundred bucks, you could attend Mack Boring's Diesel School in New Jersey and learn a lot about maintaining and repairing the Yanmar. Or you could hire a good marine mechanic to get it spiffed up. Either way is cheaper than the 15 OB and is more suitable to the sailboat. I know your diesel frustrations, but they're solvable. And I'm no mechanic.

diesel blues

Fix the diesel...you'll miss the real alternator on the diesel. Plus, you'll want at least a 20 hp outboard which is expensive not to mention the fuel change, the poor mileage and the 2 stroke oil you'll have to buy and the fact it will cavitate. You need bite the bullet and have someone fix everything on the diesel...belts, waterpumps, filters, hoses, injectors and bring back the reliability of you diesel, unless of course it's been declared a total wreck with bad compression, oil leaks and a ball of rust, ect.

Never switch from Diesel to gas

I agree with others below--- Outboards have their own set of problems--Gas oil mix, cavitation, prop coming out of water in rough seas, wussy alternator, but the worst is that you will bring gasoline on board. Odor, explosive vapor, ignition system, bilge blower, exhaust smell, etc.--DON"T DO IT. Have the compression checked first, and if it is ok spend the effort and $$ on repairing the diesel. I was a mechanic in the USCG, and nothing beats a diesel for durability, reliability and power.

Had Both and Love the outboard

I maintained a sailboat diesel for 25 years and don't miss it a bit. They require fairly constant maintenance not to mention the break downs that will occur. If you don't enjoy maintaining a diesel don't do it. It is a sailboat. The engine just needs to be used on occasion. I have a 25 footer now and love the outboard. The only thing better would be NO ENGINE. My grandfather used to say that was the sign of a real sailor. He was a real sailor.

Vetus 20

Our H30 was repowered in the early ninties with the 3 cyl vetus diesel, and has give excellent service. they are made by mitsubishi I believe in the Netherlands, but mine came with a wonderful manual with pictures of someone actually doing almost every maintainence and repair item needed. Parts I hear are expensive, but so far we havn't needed any, and its my understanding the initial cost is quite a bit lower than some others. Hugh s/v Spotted Dog
