9.9 too big
A 9.9 is way too big for a Mariner. I have an 8 hp on my Oday 23, a considerably heavier and larger boat than the Mariner. I sail in LIS, which has some significant tidal flows, and I almost never have to go to full throttle. A 9.9 on a Mariner is just a waste of weight, gas and pollution. Also, if you are buying a new engine, you will be buying a four stroke (they don't make small two strokes anymore). A 9.9 four stroke is not only heavier than its two stroke cousin, it also generates more low-end torque, which means it is more efficient at moving slow, heavy boats like sailboats. A low horsepower 4 stroke like a 4 or 6 would be plenty of power for a Mariner. Don't forget to upgrade your mounting bracket too. The OEM mounting brackets on Odays were made for two strokes, not four strokes. Remember, its not just the weight of the engine you must take into consideration when choosing a bracket. The new brackets are specifically designed to handle the stresses of a four stroke.
