Looking at installing an outboard motor on my 27 catalina, and would like to hear from other sailors what there experience has been with the various models. I have been told the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust was good and reliable. Thanks Derek.

Consider the rudder interference

I have a long shaft on my C27 and have to tilt it up so that the drive does not hit the rudder. This angle pushes the stern down into the water and floods the lazerette, causing the motor block to just skim the water surface. I am considering cutting a notch in my rudder next haul out to allow the motor to be in the full down position.

Yamaha 9.9

I bought a Yamaha 9.9, high thrust 3 years ago for my 27 and have had alot of success. Motor runs very quietly and has been very dependable. Don't expect a great difference with the high thrust, though. It still takes alot of time to stop the 27!

Yamaha Motors

I had a Yamaha 4 stroke 15hp motor on a 14ft aluminum boat. I know it's different but I can speak to the quality of the motors. Fantastic! That motor ran like a Swiss watch! very quiet, great on fuel. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Regards, Chris

Catalina 27 outboards

Derek-you asked for info on outboards, I have a Honda "100" which is a 9.9 long shaft four stroke. It is reliable and gives hull speed in low head winds. We have the rudder problem at full throttle, but I wanted to mention Booth Industries in Victoria that supplies a new rudder for $600 cdn or a rebuild of existing for about $450cdn. There have been good comments on his work. As far as any brand is concerned, I would recommend electric start and remote controls as it is difficult to maintain the helm, and have your head down in the well or over the stern adjusting power or shifting, especially when docking. Hope this helps.

Outboard

I have a 15 hp Honda 4 stroke that I absolutely love! I made a trade with someone so had little choice in hp - I would have gone with a 9.9 if I was buying new. I also strongly agree with Brian to go with electric start
