Ourboard on the Vega

Hello All,

I'm new to the group. I have just bought a Vega this past November,
1975 model. It has a Volvo MD7B that I want to deep six and get an
outboard. I plan to mount it on the stern. I like the Mercury and the
Honda 9.9. Has anybody in the gruop had any experience with these
motors? They weigh about 93 pound (~ 43 kilos). Have they effected
performance? Do they effect the boat's balance? I think I would like
an electric start but if anyone can give me an idea if hand start is
ok I would like to know. It seems that having to reach over the stern
could be a real pain and possibly unsafe!?

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Rick

If the Volvo MD6 works then keep it. A wonderful engine and so much better than an outboard. If you intend to race your Vega then she will be out of class with an outboard. Old saying "If it aint broke, dont fix it..."

I agree with Steve on the if it aint broke... point, but to throw in
my 2 pence worth I when I purchased my vega in Oct2002 she had been
stripped down quite a bit. She did come with a Honda 8HP outboard
though and I can vouch for it being a good engine. It is surprisingly
easy to start though I wish it had a longer shaft. On the flip side I
plan on reinstalling an inboard as soon as I have the funds and the
exchange rates are aggreeable for purchasing the beta. Till then I've
plenty of other projects to spend money on, and the outboard works
for my purposes I just hate having gasoline onboard.
