It sounds like you need to go through the set up process - swing compass and the like... the 4000 system is a little funky - also check your rudder gain - once it passes 20 degrees off course it just circles...

Happen to me with the 3000
Had this happen to me and it took quite some time to figure it out. It was a galvanized emergency tiller that was located too close to the control box. It has a compass and any large metal object can screw it up. It then goes in circles. Hope this is your problem. Good luck.

Check port and starboard buttons.
I had that problem once on a Hunter 27. It turned out the edge of the port button had gotten under the case so when you turn it to auto if would continue to turn you 1 degree every second or so. You can fix the button by pushing the button in the opposite direction until it pop away from the cover.

Maybe it is some kind of electrical field in Toms River- seems to do similiar things to email!
