I would like to start a dialogue with other owners of the twenty-five footers. Ours is a 1977 which is docked in Orange Park, Florida. Do any of the other owners have inboards in their vessels? Do you find the cockpit small? Any modifications to the tiller to increase the room in the cockpit? Here is hoping I make some new sailing friends. Marvin s/v Endless Summer

Motor Well with outboard.

I have a 1974 with a custom built motor well. It houses(barely) a Chrysler 15hp outboard. I works well when I don't have to work on the motor and it keeps the boat's lines clean. My rudder was moved to the transom but a wheel was installed so I think my cockpit is even smaller that a boat with a tiller. I sail with my wife and son, it's enough room for us. When other people come out with us it gets crowded fast. Otherwise, we enjoy her! Dan s/v Essayons

I have 74 model

Hi Marvin, I have I 74 model that I bought a few years ago as a basket case and spent the first 9 months getting her fit to sail. Work continues during the off season as time and weather permit. I've never heard of an inboard 25. How do you work on the motor? It must be awfully tight. I have the low profile cabin top. I think by 1977 they had changed over to the trunk cabin.

H25 Info

We sail a '78 H25.Shortened the tiller by appx 8 " for more room.Removed the alcohol stove and added a shelf below the opening for storing pots, paper plates, dishes, etc.Covered the opening with a cutting board which doubles as counter top/work space.Added an 8"flip down shelf on port side of the storage/,cooler compartment to hold bar provisions.Completely gutted the interior last spring and replaced he old "upholstery"wallcovering with automotive headliner material(appx $6.00/yd,6feet wide) purchased from auto supply firm.Used counter top laminate on the shelves and trimmed off with quarter round stained in a complimentary color. We use terry cloth for inside cushion covers with drawstrings sewn in(much like very shallow, wide duffle bags).Easy to wash and inexpensive to change if you tire of the color. Lot of sweat equity but she looks great.

Another Hunter Owner

I have a 77 H-25. She's a great little boat but the cockpit is very cramped. Probably one of the tightest cockpits I've seen on a boat this size and it's a real inconvenience. I just put my crew behind me and keep the tiller at my back. Seems to work best. I have a 9.9hp Johnson on a hinged mount off the transom. Works very well and really pushes this boat along nicely. I've been fighting the battle of redoing the interior wallcovering. I was considering using a fabric-backed upholstery vinyl for easy application and clean up, but I will check out the automotive headliner material which might just be a better choice. I've also been considering removing the alcohol stove. I've never used it and it's really wasted space. I have a propane one burner stove in a case that uses canned fuel which seems to do the job nicely. About $40 and well worth it. This boat has tons of storage room inside but it isn't very well organized or practical. I'd love to hear some ideas for making it more efficient. I was also considering installing an electric foot pump for the sink. The hand pump just isn't effective enough. I'd love to hear some ideas on what others have done. Thanks for the anticipated input. Happy sails, Ms. Toads's Wild Ride San Francisco Bay, California

My Two Cents

I am the proud owner of a 1979 H25 ("Whisper"). Her port-of-call is Lake St Clair (referred to as the littlest of the Great Lakes with a nasty disposition. I am totally happy with her performance and interior comfort. However, like you and most other 25' owners, feel that the cockpit is somewhat cramped. Most of this is due to the fact that the tiller takes up so much room and I have been planning on shortening it but just never got around to it. Thanks to Sam of Atlanta, who has confirmed my estimate of how much to remove, I will probably accomplish that this spring. I have made many changes to mine both for safety and convenience. Some of the safety related aspects (I mostly single hand) are: added a roller furler; ran all halyards back to the cockpit. Convenience changes include: cutting a hole in the aft lazaret tray to permit access to the cockpit drain line and the motor mount bolts; main sheet traveller assembly to permit easy adjustment under load; starboard lazaret cover (underside of lid) storage of spare dock lines, etc. As far as auxilliary power goes, I have never heard of an inboard source. I can not imagine where it would fit or, even more important, how you would work on it once it was there. I have a Mercury 9.9 and am fairly happy with it. Would suggest looking under owner's comments in this web for pros & cons of the 25.
