In the archives there are quite a few posts about the Origo alcohol stoves but not about the portable heater. Any one here have experience with the Origo 5100 alcohol heater? The commodore gets cold and a heated cabin would be helpful. It is a Catalina 22 so we don't need a lot of btu's and I am intriqued by the 5100 if it works. Thanks.

I have a 22' Venture and find that using my one burner stove to heat my coffee warms up the cabin, even in cold weather. I just don't leave it on when I go to sleep. The stove and compressed gas unit only costs me $30 at walmart. Novelman

Forget it

I have one. It is a wast of time. The fumes it puts out are so noxiuis that you will need to open the boat completely . There goes the heat so why bother. The portable propane heaters are better than this thing and they scare me too. Find another way for sure.

I've used the 5100 for years in my 21 footer.

I'm perfectly happy with mine but some people do seem to have a problem with the alcahol fumes. My sister won't let me use it when she's on board. Make sure you use pure alcahol with no additives. Ace makes a good product. I've used mine for over ten years. It heats the cabin well for temps down to around 40 degrees. Below freezing it becomes less effective but still warms the place a little and is a good hand warmer. When it's chilly in the forties or fifties I open the forward hatch an inch or two and crack the companionway slider for ventilation. In temps above that you can open everything or adjust the flame lower. It's really nice on those damp days. And you can cook on it too.

My friend Suzanne tells me that the brand of

alcohol makes a big difference in the smell of the emmissions from her cook stove. She lived aboard for five years and burned a lot of alcohol.
