Original transducer damage

As I was getting ready to apply bottom paint I noticed the black plastic was completely broken off the tranducer. All that remains is the tapered wood mount and a metal plate below that. Should I remove it, and if so, how is that done to prevent any possible leaks or should I just leave it alone? Can it be replaced? If I get a new depth gauge, where should the transducer be mounted?

Hunter 23 WIll be at a Navy base
I have a Hunter 23 that did not have a depth finder. I bought a portable Eagle that runs on batteries. I glued the transducer suction cup to the haul and ran the wire up the stern and keep it in a the storage bin in the cockpit. When I go out I just pull it out set it on the seat and turn it on. May not be the best looking method but it works just fine and no worries about leaks etc. The only thing is that you need to keep the wire away from the rudder pins or kiss it good by. I cut one transducer wire in half with no effort. Needless to say I was not happy.

take a picture and froward it to davecondon@mindspring.com and include the size of the hole. Make sure att: crazy dave/hunter sailboat in the remarks as I get a lot of junk mail. I will give you an aspect as a former Hunter dealer who outsold everyone on the small boats and I am creditied with the water ballast series.
