I've pulled the lines through...
that were originally missing on my 31'. If your reef lines only control the clews as described by Steve's post you don't have to drill out and pull off the cast end fitting at the end of the boom. Run an electricians fish tape up through the underside opening of the forward cast boom fitting. These are the openings just forward of the port or starboard cam cleats at the gooseneck. Push the tape out until it reaches the boom end fitting and extract. Tie on a masons line to the tape end and pull this line back forward with the fish tape, over the forward sheave and out of the forward fitting. Use the masons line now as a flexible sounder to pull the 3/8th" reef line from the gooseneck over the sheave at the gooseneck and back aft to the end fitting; extract. Rig as described by Steve. If you have the internal shuttle cars that Les describes I guess you need to pull the boom end fitting to rig the cars and the tack and clew line segments.BTW If you have the car-less system as described by Steve, (What I have), you can still set up as single handed control from the cockpit without going forward. I replaced the deck organizers with a double stacked set, replaced the port and starboard rope clutches on the coach roof with quads and added two isomat pad eyes port and starboard on the mast just alongside of the gooseneck. The new hardware accommodates new tack reef lines attached to the sails tack earrings (the ones you would slip over the rams horns). These compliment the clew reef lines. To reef:Point into the wind, release the halyard. Winch in the tack reef line until the sail earring aligns with the pad eye on the mast, tighten clutch, winch in the clew reef line till the clew sets on the boom, tighten clutch, winch up halyard, tighten clutch, If conditions warrant you can now go safely forward and set in the reef points to tidy up, fall off the wind and sail away. P.S. I disabled the boom cam cleats, the rope clutch holds the clew reef lines in place now. I’ll be glad to show you the set up.Yesterday's Dream1985 H31 Crab Alley Bay, Kent Island MDHull #31395
