Anyone know approximately what a 1985 H23 with a motor and trailer listed for? Also, I'm looking at two right now - one has a swing keel and one has a wing keel - any advice? I'm leaning toward the swing type for shallow water access.. big performance difference between the two?

Wing Keel

I had the same decision. I had the winged keel one surveyed and then asked about the water ballast Cb one. Surveyors opinion was that the Wk was a great boat and the keel was one less thing that could break. I have nbeen very pleased with the performance.

1985 H23 Wing Keel Model

We purchased the above boat mid-summer of 1985 and paid $11,000. It is a great boat!! We owned it for 10 years. We did add a genoa with roller furling and a 9.9 Mercury outboard. The only reason we sold it was to move up to a Hunter 28.

Wing keel version is more versatile

I beleive the water balast version of this boat is called a 23.5 I own a 23' wing keel version, but I do not know what the origial price was for the boat. I paid $ 10,000 in 1995. The boat I own had two spinakers, 3 jibs, 2 mains, and added electronics, improved motor mount, revised tiller design and other stuff. The price with all this added stuff was a little higher than the goig price for most 23's on the market at that time. When the Hunder 23.5 first came out, several of them appeared at our sailng club. Today there are none. I believe that is because that eventually sailors in the club get into the casual racing that is a constant at the club I belong to. They soon found that the 23.5 was difficult to upgrade. There phiscally was no place to put a traveler and rigging the boat for a 155 geny must be difficult to impossible. Meanwhile the 23 wing keel version has room for all this stuff and more. I remember discussing possible ways to add the running rig for a 155 geny with the owner of a 23.5 one fall. By the next spring the 23.5 was gone and an ODAY 25 took its place. My point is that if you are just sailing to sail, probably either boat will work well. If you envision getting into the racing scene, then between the two - go with the wing keel boat. email me if you want to discuss it some more. bleathen@aol.com

h23 keel types

There were some swing keel h23s , there were even a very few wing keel with a retractable center board/ keel , I saw this combination at the h23 nationals , the boat did well, it also had other upgrades, it was from somewhere near toledo and the skipper wa a guy named Ken I think, if I were going to trailer sail I might give serious thought to the swing keel design , also check out the area where u intend to sail, you could not sail a swing keel where I sail because of water depth , a swing keel might go in more shallow water than a wing keel , but that does not mean it will sail in more shallow water/ big difference, I would also check out these archives about problems relating to swing keel, , broken lines , broken bolts, trunk crack etc etc, the h23 wing keel is a great boat we have owned ours for 8 years and although I had never given any thought to racing, I did for the first time this season and will definitely continue. think about where and how you intend to use the boat before u make the final choice, good luck , Mike B

Orginal Owner

I bought my Hunter 23 wing keel in the fall of 1985, even though it was a 1986 model year. I paid 10,999. new, including trailor and motor. It is still my baby, until I move up to a thirty-something in two years. A great cruiser and occasional racer. Still looks great and sleek.

I have the centerboard model

I have the H23 with the wing (sort of) keel and the fiberglass centerboard. I don't know if that's what you meant by swing keel. I thought only H22 was produced with the actual swing KEEL. Anyway, the centerboard helps quite a bit going up wind, but its also a paint to lower and sometimes to raise (until you bump it into the bottom) My boat can be sailed in shallow water with the board up with no problems and it probably handles about the same as a regular H23 w/ the wing keel then.... Just bought one

I just bought a 1985 23. I got mine from the orig owner and have his bill of sale. With stand. equip, trailer, and outboard (9hp) it came to $11,653.20 w/tax, on 3/16/85. Haven't got a chance to put it in the water yet so I can't help on your choice problem. Mine is keel centerboard.
