I have a ysb8 in my Catalina and have been told that it may not be the original engine. I can't find a year on the engine to date it. Any one know what engine's were used. The boat was built in California. I say this because I was told that in the late 70's some were built in Vancouver Canada. Thanks Derek

I just bought a C 27, 1982 (#5110). In my research for C-27, the only engine I came across was the Atomic 4 gas engine. The atomic 4 was the standard for Catalina until about 1983/1984 as the manufacturer went out of business. It was that time period when Catalina switched over to diesel engines as the power plant. (I never heard of a "ysb8")

Atomic 4

Sounds like they may have replaced the A-4 with your current engine. Not uncommon. To be certain, I would call Catalina - I have heard that they are generally helpful in getting answers to your questions. Are you looking to repower, or just interested in your current motor? Atomic 4

I have Hull #3353 Late 77 early 78 and the original engine is an A4. Still running strong. Hope that helps.

If it's a gas inboard..

...then it's an Atomic 4. I don't know how to tell if it's the original one though. My 1974 C27 was built in Canada although the ID plate says California. The way you tell is the shape of the forward windows. The ones that taper forward are US built and the rectangle ones are Canadian. Engines

Most of the earlier Cat 27s had atomic 4s but some were made with a single cylinder Petter (English?) diesel. Your engine is probably a replacement.
