I was just wondering if anyone has any helpful hints for the trip from Oriental NC up the Neuse to New Bern. Although we are experienced sailers, this will be our first overnight trip. Any suggestions welcome!BTW- We are sailing an O'Day22. Thanks, Joel

Flanners Beach

Hi Joel I think it will be a good trip. I have not sailed it but have motored it in a skiff and spent time taking pictures along the shore. Flanners Beach may be a good anchor for you. It is gentle bottom but sandy way out, so watch your depth. It is out from a national park so very quiet. If you got a dinghy I guess you could drop your hook just past the railroad bridge by the Shearton and do some touring. Let me know how it goes. I have a O'Day 35 in Pecan Grove. Where are you? Sail up to New Bern

Joel, The trip should be straightforward. We have done it many times. Just follow the chart and channel markers. Going under the new bridge is fun. A nice marina to stay at is the Bridge Pointe Marina across the Trent River from the Sheraton. They have floating docks and give a discount for Boat U. S. members and have a pumpout facility. Last week we spent 2 nights in Oriental. Leaving the slip at Oriental marina, we got a score of all 8's and one 10 from the locals on the porch at the Coffee Bean with a 20 knot wind trying to push us into the seawall. Enjoy your trip. Oriental 2 New Bern

The trip is really uneventful if you follow the chart. There is a big ol sand bar just under in the middle of the Neuse River so stay south and you will be fine. Actually it is a very scenic along the way and New Bern has tons of fun things to do, see, drink and eat etc., so take your time and enjoy. The entrance is well marked and both marinas are good. Thanks!

Thanks for the input! Actually we took a trip this past Saturday from Oriental to Minnesott and the wind was perfect. It took us about 2 hours and that was sailing straight up the Neuse basically. I plan on it taking about 6-7 hours sailing to New Bern. We're really not going to be in a rush anyway. I've got new charts so we'll probably just make it up as we go along. Depth is not a concern because we only draw about 2 feet. That new bridge should be fun to check out from the water... It's the largest in NC. As far as where to anchor, we'll just find someplace out of the way. We might get a slip at the Sheratin for the fireworks on the 4th. We only have a two person raft for a dinghy so a dock would be nice! Btw- We keep our boat down Greens Creek and we've been there forever. What a great place Oriental is! Thanks again for the info. -Joel

Cherry Point Restrictions??

Anybody know how far away you have to stay from this area on the river? Is it clearly marked in the river? Thanks! Joel

I was the "10"

Wayne, That was a fine piece of seamanship. Just the week before in similar winds we had a power boat make near contact or contact with no less then 3 boats, one of them twice. Skipper of the hit boat had to take the helm to get it in the slip. For information we are known as the Porch Pirates up and down the ICW. We do have fun, especially when one of our own dares to dock. Good Winds Dave s/v DAMWEGAS
