Optimum Running RPM for 18HP Volvo Penta

I have a First 310 with an 18hp 2002 Volvo Penta engine. When running for some distance (1 hour or more), what is the optimum rpms I should be running at. I usually run about 1200-1500, but heard diesels are meant to be run at high rpms.

I run mine up to around 2500 rpm, any more and you start seeing some black smoke.

I have a First 310 with the same engine and a fixed 2 blade prop.
