My Autohelm ST50 Depth died on my H26. I'm going to replace it with a Raymarine ST40 or ST60 Depth. Is the ST60 worth the extra $185? Please share your opinions: ST40 vs ST60. Thanks...BrianW

ST 40 or ST 60

ST40 works well as stand alone instrument or repeater. Raymarine site says ST40 is bidata, ST60 is tridata. I think that means the first is part of two instrument package (Depth + Speed) the latter is Depth+Speed+temperature system. I installed the ST40 with shoot-thru-the-hull transducer in my H260 and it has worked without a hitch. Install next to bilge pump, use mineral oil. The install instructions are easy to follow.

Tech Support

You can call RayMarine tech support (800-539-5539)and find out if the ST-40 will easily replace the ST-50. I understand that the ST-40 transducer is has short or compact design and may not fit the old thru hull fitting for the ST-50. You can also ask them the difference/benefits of the ST-60.

Leave Old Transducer or Remove It?

If I must use another transducer that can't use the old thru hull hole, do I just leave the old transducer in place... or should I remove and patch old hole? Is there a down side to leaving the old transducer in place? Thanks, BrianW

ST40

I had exactly the same problem last year. My Autohelm Tridata ST50 died and it had to be replaced (replacement cost was lower than repair cost). I decided to install ST40 bidata instead of costly ST60. I am using this since last year with no need of a missing functionality from ST50. I even did not need to change the transducers. Just call Raymarine technicans and ask them to check whether the transducer is still functional.

There are still plenty of ST 50 displays available and probably a lot more now that so many boats will wind up in the junk yard after the two huricanes. Check out Ebay, I got spares at very low prices.

Go with the ST40

I just bought the ST40 BiData with Transducers. It cost me $265 off Ebay from a Raymarine dealer and it included the 2 transducers. I knock out the old ones installed the new ones and hooked it up. I will probably buy the ST60 displays off Ebay used and have a nice pedistal mounted setup as I will be putting on the 4000 Autohelm, and want the head units to look the same. I will use the ST40 as a "backup unit" although technically it would be the primary as the transducers plug in to it. I also bought a great SeaTalk to NMEA converter which I modified to be USB and have it running with SeaClear on my PC which gives me full moving map display with depth, waterspeed, log etc. All works so far!!!
