Opinions on crack on H216

Ok folks, looking at a boat that appears to have a not insignificant crack. Please share opinions on severity and if this will impact structural integrity. I’ll search history but please share opinions if you’d like on latest and greatest repair solution.

A friend repaired his JY15 with Plexus. The repair has proven itself over the years. There were cracks all over the hull. He named it Humpty Dumpty

Yes, that "looks" like a bad crack. Hard to tell from the photos, but if it goes through, it's bad. Structural integrity is just one problem. It will allow a lot of water into your double hull which is your emergency flotation, especially if the foam flotation is degraded. The crack can be fixed fairly easily if you want to fool with fiberglass, but I'd be worried that the floatation foam is already soaked.

Oops, not "fool with fiberglass", it's thermo plastic so needs different techniques as @Project_Mayhem said.

The H216 hull is constructed from Luran-S, a trade name for acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA). Conventional epoxy products often provide poor adhesion to ASA due to the rigidity of the cured epoxy and the low surface energy of the plastic. JB Weld, however, manufactures several adhesive formulations that are designed specifically for challenging plastic substrates and are reportedly well suited for this type of repair.


I did a google of JB-Weld products made for ASA and got this response...

• J-B Weld Plastic Bonder: This is a specialized structural acrylic (MMA) or polyurethane-based adhesive. It is designed specifically to chemically bite into styrene-based plastics like ABS and ASA. It maintains a small amount of flexibility, preventing it from snapping when the plastic expands or flexes. [1, 2]

• J-B Weld PlasticWeld (Syringe or Putty): Formulated for rigid and semi-flexible plastics. It bonds well to styrene plastics, though it cures more rigidly than the Plastic Bonder. [1, 2]
