I can see the benefits of a halyard winch but have not considered these a necessity on a C-22. As many have posted, the sails are not great in size and weight to haul up. I have all lines leading aft with single rope clutches on the cabin top and love them. So easy for single-handed sailing, both when raising and lowering the main (great when lowering as we can control the downward flight and get the main flaked and bungeed up with ease).
Yes, they cost but surely have to be cheaper than a winch and take up less space (mine fit nicely between the sliding hatch rail and hand rail atop the cabin.
