I am currently sailing a 272 and thinking about a 322. I would value any comments pro or con regarding performance, living aboard, etc. Must make a decision on the purchase of the 322 soon. Any help would be appreciated.

O'Day 322 - Good buy

I have an 1988 O'Day 322 for 6 years now and I would buy her again. I sail in LI sound up to Block Island / Martha’s Vineyard. The only problems that I have had where related to the fos-foam(?) rudder that had water in it. I had to have the yard remove it and I drilled sections of it to fill with epoxy. She is a bit wide so I wouldn’t recommend her for racing but she has a lot of usable space inside. The motor (the original Yanmar diesel) is a bit undersized so that can be an issue in heavy seas but it is fine for getting into and out of port. Best of Luck!

Opinions of 322

Thanks Dave for your input. The boat I am considering is on Lake Erie and is also an '88. I'm told that there is water damage inside the deck around the stantions. Have you ever had problems in this area? Seller says he had an estimate of $6,000 to repair the damage. He is asking $28,900 for the boat. Does this seem high? Glen

Opinion of 322 -- in development

Glen: I'm in the process of buying a 322 myself, so while I can't yet tell you how she sails or the like, I have every reason to believe I'm making a good decision. I'm moving up from a 272LE (offers, anyone?) and am looking forward to the extra space, the Euro-styling, the hot water and much more. I looked at a few 322s, and a few 34s and 35s, and this boat looks like one I'll be happy to sail for many years to come. Good luck with your decision, and your purchase. The price you were quoted sounds reasonably in the ballpark, given the delam issue. Just make sure you have a competent, thorough surveyor give her the once-over before plunking down your hard-earned cash and signing on the dotted line. Pete
