Logan Martin

Logan Martin is a flood control lake. The pool level is lowered sustantially during the winter and is not raised until mid to late April. The lake bed was not clear cut when the lake was developed. It therefore has a lot of trees just below the water surface and can be a dangerous lake for unaware boaters. It has a red clay bed and is always a muddy brown body of water. It is a good bass fishing lake but not very good for sailing. I had my 26M on the lake during May and June 2005. I am a newbie sailor. There was little to no wind so I practiced my docking skills a lot. There are no resturants on the water that I am aware of. Lake Guntersville in northern Alabama is part of the Tennessee River system and would be a much better choice for sailing. Pensacola, Florida is only four hours farther south than Logan Martin. Pensacola Bay and Gulf of Mexico are beautiful sailing areas. I moved my boat to Pensacola. I keep it on the trailer with the mast up. Hope this helps.

Lake Guntersville

I'll second Lake Guntersville! Lots of open water, marinas, and some of the best views around!

I agree

I keep my boat on Lake Logan Martin, and it's honestly just not that great. the good thing is it's close to home. Right now, the water level is down, making it tough to launch a boat on the lake. It may or may not be back up by spring break. Guntersville is absolutely beautiful, with a friendly sailing club/ marina called Brown's Creek Sailing Marina. It's surounded by Mountains and even has bald eagles if you're lucky. There are a couple of restaurants on Logan Martin, and the Birmingham Sailing Club is there, too, down by the dam. Personally, I've been looking at that "Land Between the Lakes area in western Kentucky/ Tennesee as a nice, big, inland area to sail.

Wheeler Lake

Wheeler lake is a nice big lake and they don't lower it that much in the winter. Guntersville is very nice. But as others have said I'd go a few hours farther to the coast. Panama city is great. There are three major bays and if you want you can go west to choctawhatchee bay or east to St Joe. There probably isn't a better place to sail than up the intracoastal waterway between Fort Walton and Pensacola. this is all protected water with barrier islands to explore. The waterway is about 1/2-1/4 mile wide and with the wind out of the south or north you can beam reach for hours.

Cap'n; If you think Logan Martin is huge . .

You'd be really impressed with Lake Guntersville and I second Win and PhotoEd and will put in a plug for The Anchorage just north of the 431 bridge. If I were coming that far south though, I'd seriously think about traveling down to the Gulf coast - Pensacola, Ft. Walton, Panama City. Beautiful sailing and prolly warmer to boot! Spring break in N. Alabama can be uncomfortable.

Brown's Creek!

Hey Stan, that's where we call home! Has a nice "Key West" kind of feel to it...rustic and inexpensive! Anchorage was where we originally planned to stay, but ended up with some friends that didn't want to make the move from BC.

Lake Martin

We had our family reunion on Lake Martin. Don't remember seeing any sailboats, though. Certainly nothing of any significant size. It's a man made lake, so I'm sure there are plenty of stumps and other hazards closer to shore, but it is a HUGE lake!

Beautiful lake

Lake Martin is a beautiful lake. Steep shores and plenty anchorages. Not much wind though.

Thanks for the Opinions !

Well , it sounds like I definately need to try Guntersville Lake sometime . I did think it would be warmer by the 20th of March . I have been to Panama City twice with my previous San Juan 21 and loved it . However I've never been there Spring break week and I'm afraid it might be awefully crowded . My Wife and I really need to get away and relax , it's been that kind of a few months . I have the option of keeping my boat at Tampa Bay where my cousin has a home right on the water at Apollo Beach ( both lawyers ) . I'm not sure I want to fight traffic for 18 hours one way ! Stan , I've been to Kentucky Lake several times and love it . You just have to watch the depths especially on the west side . Let's just say when you have to pound your keel safety bolt out with a hammer and it's smiling at you it can get shallow pretty fast . Ky Lake has nice anchorages and several lodges along the way . If you want more info drop me a line . I have been planning a trip sometime to Charlotte Harbor . I've done some research and that area looks great , but again the long drive .I don't think Spring Break would make it as crowded as Panama City would be though . Again , thanks for the opinions . Cap'n One Aye
