On a previous thread there was a lot of discussion about the various state regulations regarding operators permits etc. for boaters. Here deep in red neck country, all you need to operate a boat is a boat. So if say I decide to go north during the summer one of these days, will I get my butt in a sling by not having any kind of operators permit, or do they recognize that us folks down here, are not smart enough to have found that little extra bit of tax income yet.

Permits

You did not say what type of boat you had or what your level of skill was. On the average the only "permits" you need are if you under 14 and operating a Jet Ski. There should not be any problem operating a vessel "up north". Just make sure your stae registration is in order with the numbers on the boat, and if documented, have that data in order. By the way you are not in Redneck country, we are. You are in Coon-Ass territory. Big difference. Coon-asses are much more civilized!

Current summary of requirements by state

Hi, This site might help you see what a state will require right now. More and more states are increasing the age requirement.

Alabama a Closer Problem

You must have a license in Alabama !!! But in Alabama if yo are legal inyour state you can operate in Alabama for a while without a license ..I think it is for 3 months a year.

Maryland requires people born after a certain year

to complete a boating safety course. Maryland also has a reciprocal agreement with other states. If it is legal in your home state it is permited here and vise versa.

wrong turn

If I'm somewhere in Middle America on my boat I sure as hell made a wrong turn somewhere and SHOULD be arrested for pure stupidity.......

You won't have any problems in Maryland, Pennsylvania or New Jersey. While all have some type of certification processes, they're all for those born in the late 70's, early 80s. NJ will eventually require everyone to certify their saving the older folks for last.

If NJ puts it off long enough we will be dead.

I think they don't want to have to listen to a whole buch of old farts bitchin about another license. ;)

NJ does not require a license for "tidal waters"

Just a certificate of Safety training . It can be simple as one of those 8 hour courses and whether you know the basics of boat ownership (i.e. red right returning). You could be a 16 Y/O kid with no drivers license and be able to operate a boat in NJ this certificate of Safety training Unless you are over 48 Y/O you'll need the Safety Training Certificate and by next June (2008) you'll have to be over 58 Y/O. By June 2009 everyone operating a boat will be required to pass the Safety Training . If you are out of State they will not require it just as long as you are just passing through. I think staying anything over 90 days would require it. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/Licenses/boating-safety-education-040406.pdf COnnecticut has pretty much the same "Passing through" rule but it is listed as 60 days http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/boating/boating_guide/part1_07.pdf

The State of Washington now requires...

an education card. The difference between the two is that a license needs to be renewed, where as this card ($10) is good for life. This card just certifies that you have passed a Washington State Approved Boating safety course. The card cannot be revoked and you will only need to pay again if the card needs to be replaced. Though some may consider this a tax, it should be considered a fee. This law was passed by the Washington State Legislature in 2005. Thank you, if you require further information please contact me. AJ Parlan Office Assistant 3 Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission Boating Programs Office (360) 586-6592 P.S. The card is required for anyone operating a boat with a motor having at least 15HP or more and born after 1955.

Prioritizing the youngest

Ross from what I understand their plan is to prioritize the youngest first. It's a multi year plan that will eventually get to the old farts as long as you put it we don't die first. Everyone will have to get certified sooner or later though. Mike

Canada PCOC

If you come north to the Great White North, you will need a PCOC after Sept 15, 2009. Here is the link: http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=015182&tid=024

This is very depressing!

Our governments have gone crazy with rules. You don't know how much freedom we have lost till you stay in another country for awhile. Very depressing.

Kenny H. I agree

I don't want more fee's. I don't want more licenses, etc. I don't want to be mandated to wear my life jacket at all times. I don't want more hoops to jump through to go boating and be free of everyday bureaucracy But in this case making sure those on the water know just the basics, like the difference between a Red Nun and a Green Can isn't so bad to me (all you need to do is have some knucklehead on the water coming at you once or twice and your mind would be changed too) So taking a "one time" boat safety certificate (with a nominal 1 time fee - not an annual license) that should be good for any state to prove that you know the basics of operating a boat is fine with me. Lets just keep it simple and not a revenue sorce.

Taxes!!!!!!!!!!!

After paying $206.00 for a CDL with all the bells and whistles today in NC, not to mention the $94.00 to get the security clearance from the Department of Idiot, I mean Homeland Security, (That make $300.00 for a license!) I sure don't look forward to more taxes! At least the DMV examiner called it a tax and not a fee! For what it's worth! Jack

some knucklehead on the water

"...all you need to do is have some knucklehead on the water coming at you once or twice and your mind would be changed too..." The proposals would NOT stop that from happening. The knuckleheads may be able to read and pass a test. They may NOT have the ability to utilize what they MAY have learned.

I have seen the details of the water

squirting fountain jets they use for display. I think that we could arm ourselves against knuckleheads. Concerning taxes: I keep my civil nature by presuming that ALL of MY tax dollars are used to maintain the bridge that I use to travel to by boat. The government wastes your taxes but mine are well spent on the essential things that I need.

Hi Pete, I just sent an e-mail ...

up north to find out whether the PCOC applies to U.S. citizens and whether a Power Squadron issued Boating Safely Certificate will serve the same purpose. Thanks for the heads up. Terry
