Opening Porthole on C30

Greetings, It's hot down here in Florida right now! My berth sits perpendicular to the prevailing winds during the summer, so my airflow through the boat in port is virtually non-existant. Also, sailing under a beam reach with light winds provides no cabin airflow. I feel that a simple solution to both problems would be some portholes that we could open on each side of the saloon, allowing some cross-flow. However, after measuring this portholes, I realized that they are not symetrical. Does anyone know of a source for opening portholes for the saloon of the Catalina 30? Does anyone HAVE opening portholes? Thanks, Barry

With your new (to you) boat

we'll bet you'll have tons of questions. This is a good place to start. You may also want to consider the C30 Association website, which I believe is www.catalina30.com (rather than org). If that doesn't work, try a Google search on Catalina 30. As far as opening ports, I recommend checking out the opening ports available in the marketplace, like West Marine's catalogs or online, and then see if they'll fit your boat. Your other choices include adding dorades or cabintop Nicro vents, solar or battery charged. Lots of options out there, walk around the docks and see what others have done and check in the with C30 guys.

Thanks for the link

and the info. I actually got in touch with the tech guys at CatalinaDirect who confirmed that the trapezoidally-shaped saloon portholes are unique in shape. The tech guy said that the company who originally built them for Catalina has since gone out of business, and that nobody over made opening versions for them because of the expense. (He also said that later model Cats went to normal, symetrical windows for all the portals in the cabin except the farthest aft one.) I will check out the other options that you mentioned.... Barry
