Hey Tim on April IV: did you have fun on the logboom this weekend? We cruised up and down the cut checking out all those boats and people having a good time Friday night before the Opening Day parade Sat. At first I thought the cloud of smoke was smog from powerboats, until I realized it was from all those BBQs! How many other folks on this board were out there? Trevor

I went the other way as fast as possible

those rowing shells can get out of control. Great write up in the Sunday paper on the Duck Dodge, another boating institution we have. Scott

Lots of Crazies

Amazing. I wondered if I'd bump into anyone I knew - or who knew me. Now that I think of it, you must have been in the C36 that came by all friendly like :) Later on Friday night, there was a 19' ski-boat of some sort, full up with 20-somethings and beer, headed west through the rafted up boats. It was nearly dark and I was just hanging out, enjoying all of the action and the unbelievably warm weather we had - it topped 87 on board just before sunset. The ski-boat gets a little closer and something just didn't look right. Turns out his running lights were backwards! Red on the right and Green on the left! I hollered to him: "hey, come over here!" and after a little extra prodding, he shifted to neutral and then backed up. At first he didn't believe me, and I was checking myself because I couldn't figure out how that could happen, but I finally convinced him that they were backwards ("see all these other boats with the green on the right side?") and he slowly took off - one of his buddies figuring out how to open the windshield so he could crawl up on the bow and somehow they figured out how to fix it. About 45 minutes later, he came back by, this time showing the correct lights, and thanked me. The next morning, he wandered up to a small opening between us and another boat and I recognized him and let him squeeze between us to watch the races and the parade. Boy can those kids drink! And I'm sure that the pasty white gal in the bikini was too sunburned (and probably hung over) to go to work today (two days later!). We had a reserved spot on the log boom because my wife (Lorrie) is an agent for Windermere and they sponsored the crew races. It turns out to be a pretty sweet deal. The boat that reserved the spot on the other side of us never showed up. The night before, I had run off a fellow who tried to just tie up in an empty spot - he left and anchored in the shallow bay for the night. When the other boat didn't show up, I, good samaritan that I am, waved this guy into the open spot. He had about a 50' wooden powerboat something, in a terrible state of repair. Honest to goodness, he had stanchions and railings held on with duct tape! All in all, pretty polite in spite of the liquor, and a good time was had by all. Quite the spectacle and a whole lot of fun! Hope the weather is that nice again next year! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Quiet and Warm

We enjoyed "Opening Day" on the other (west)side of Puget Sound with winds 15 to 20 and only a single, long sleeve layer going to weather. Even reefed the main for practice. Got in about 25nm by GPS during the afternoon before watching the sun set behind the Olympic mountains. Thanks for keeping the crowds on the east side. Wendell Cat 30 hull #1492

Waited 'til Sunday

My wife and I were putting up molding in our house so we didn't end up getting out on the water until Sunday, but had a great relaxing sail on Lake Washington with very few boats on the water (~5 as far as I could see). Tacked up wind for a while than came back under spinnaker for the first time. Quite a thrill. Now I need to practice that dip pole gybe with just the two of us, my wife did a great job driving and I wish I could say the same about my pole-work...

Sounds like a great party but,,,,

I think the biggest floating party on Earth, is this summer. Same lake (sorta), same log boom and same drunks. The Seafair hydroplane races. Have you ever seen a F18 do a tail walk on a lake, ten feet off the water, stop like a helicopter and throw on the afterburners and go ballistic, straight up and out of sight? (Blue Angels) I have, from our boat and the fighter did it right in the middle of the boats. The mostly naked women were screaming to the pilot to come back because they wanted to have sex with him. We were also on the front page of the Seattle Times because of the party raft tied next to us one year, that the CG had to tow away. Illegal as hell and full of drunk teens. Three months and counting until the next one.

Opening Day??

Friday Night before Opening Day at Sand Point, the ramp was loaded. The power boats churned the north end of Lake Washington like a wading pool full of 2 year olds!! I think the overloaded power boat full of underage drinkers was there that night. Charging at flank speed into the ramp where boats were launching, hauling out, and waiting for space!! Sunday, afternoon, hardly anyone around. Light, high clouds and 10 mph winds on the Evergreen Point Bridge. A long sail, just as heavenly as Lake Washington used to be on the Opening Day weekend, back in the "Olden Days" when SYC had Opening Day and Mark Mayer races Saturday and Sunday after the parade and everything from El Toros to 100' Schooners participated. And sailing home from the races late Sunday Evening was just like last Sunday. Note: How could we get the new "520 bridge" converted to a floating tunnel so the lake would be clear and the winds could blow free?
