I have a 3 gage (wind, speed, and depth) NavPod housing. I need access to the back of the gages for calibration of the wind instrument and to check the wiring on the spedo. I thought this would be pretty simple until I discovered that the screws holding the unit together are from outer space. They look like allen headed set screws but they have a little metal pin in the center that would not let an allen wrench work. Anyone know where to find a tool for these?

Security Screws

These are "Security" or "Tamper-Proof" Screws. A good hardware/tool store should carry a selection (there are numerous configuration/sizes) http://www.qualtool.com/bits.html Alternatively, a locksmith may carry them. I got a Qualtool Inc #2100 “Security Bit Kit” (28 different bits + driver & adapters) http://www.qualtool.com/ from a local hardware store. Each bit is also available individually. Search "Tamper-Proof" or Security" bits, screwdrivers for pictures & info'. Might be just as easy to get it from Navpod (don't pay over $2-$3 or so for a single bit, or $5 for an "L" wrench). Wrench

You have to get it from navpod. It's an Allen with a hole in the end.

And when you get the screws out,,,

take one to your stainless hardware store and buy enough Phillips flat heads to replace each and every one of those damn things. I took one look at them when my nav pod arrived and said 'no way'. Do you moore your boat among a den of thieves?

I have done this,it s easy

I have same screws on my nav pod ,you need to use a small screw driver and wedge the small straight screw driver in the special screws which they use. It might be hard to understand what I am saying ,I have a srew driver set with all these different tips that go on the end of the screw driver and all the tips are different size and all different type so you use a small straight edge tip until it wedges itself in the allen shap but not realy allen and it will turn the screw, get new srews to replace these security screws.

Modify allen wrench

I used dremel tool (ball router tip?) to put a dimple into the end of a regular allen wrench.

Contact http://www.pyacht.net

They are a major retailer for Navpod. OceanSystems' website is down...maybe they've been bought out, but they used to have an online order form for the wrenches.

Thanks to all

Gord was right, I found security bits at my local Ace Hardware store. I bought every size they had since my boat is a hour away and I didn't want to guess. The first one I tried fit and the others will be returned today. Fred, I'll also take your advice and replace the screws with something more common.
