Open Transom boats

I really like my open transom Hunter 260. However, this weekend we anchored out in a nice cove that we like. The next day as we were pulling into dock we pulled out the bumpers we had stored under the table and found a rattlesnake. It was about 12' long. It stayed coiled up until we could get it remonved. I may leave a couple hatch boards in the future. It had to have swam out and crawled up the transom and into the cabin. We had seen a snake in the water in this cove a month ago but did not think it was his private cove. Needs to say we will be a little on edge the next few times we anchor out. Corky MeriCay

wow...dinner :)

That was a nice big free dinner that swam on board. Did you save me a bite :) I too like the open transom. To bad there aren't many snakes here in galveston bay :)

RATTLE SNAKE

Just thought my title did not generate much interest. The open transom made easy for the snake to get into my boat. First time for everything Corky

I'd rather be upside down

in a storm, off a lee shore on Mars, with a sunburn, sharing my plight with a rabid bear aboard, than go through what Corky did.

Not the transom...

I don't think it's the open transom that's your problem. I've read other stories about snakes getting aboard boats on the swim platform, from trees, etc. It's not common, but not unheard of. There was a good one (Sailnet?) about someone trying to shoot the thing with a gun and wound up shooting a hole in the dinghy. I think the lack of comments here is because it's kinda the nightmare you don't ever want to think about. Of course, there was the bear that jumped off the Sheraton Hotel's Pier in New Bern, NC....and the alligators farther south. Guess you gotta pic your varmits.

BIG TYPO

Sorry big typo. It was about 12 inches. However with rattlesnakes size does not matter when it comes to venom(I am a doc). A buddy got bit last year while moving rocks. By the way the best treatment for rattlesnake bite is car keys.......get in you car and go to a hospital. All of the other treatments cause more harm than good. Corky

Rattlers, Alligators, Bears, Oh My!

On a trip down and back on the ICW we had several close encounters with alligators. My wife was concerned about them getting on the boat through the open transom, which I passed off with a laugh and a "never happen". I think next time I'll take some preventive measures.
