Joe - Cape Cod Bay is wide open
Hi Joe...Yes, as long as you agree to live by the tides, Cape Cod Bay is fantastic. You can count the submerged rocks on one hand, there are very few boats, very few hazards of any kind, and just soft sand should you happen to go in too shallow. The exception is 2 hours before and after high tide - at that time, big and little fishing boats stream out of Rock Harbor (Orleans) to go make their living during high water. But just stay out of the channel - the parade only lasts about 20 minutes. The harbor masters in each town are very helpful and can give you details. You can moor a boat ion the flats for under 2 weeks for free, but you need to supply your own mooring (or anchor). But - you WILL be beached come low tide! The bay is VERY shallow, and the flats are exposed for 8 hrs btwn highs. With such a shallow draft on my Hunter 146, I can squeeze more than enough hours on either side of high water to make me ready to come back in near shore and go enjoy all the other fun Cape Cod stuff to do.I trailered and put in at Rock Harbor, and anchored her on the flats for the duration.Dennis has a large harbor too, as probably does Wellfleet.Of course, there is always the ocean or sound side, but then you have traffic, lots of hazards, currents...Drop me a line if you want more detail.(The photo is of one of the channel markers - just dead trees - I guess the harbormaster has an odd sense of humor...)
