I had the boat hauled yesterday (sigh!) and was surprised to find that I had only three barnacles on my prop and shaft. This was much better than the other boats that came out of the water in our marina. Last spring, I had cleaned the SS shaft and bronze propeller down to bright metal and wiped them with paint thinner. I then sprayed on two coats of the Interlux Trilux Primocon primer followed by two spray coats of the white Trilux paint. I also sprayed a single coat of the paint on the water intake screens for the engine and A/C unit, which were also barnacle free. I was careful not to spray primer or paint on the shaft zincs. The boat has been in the water from the end of April until the end of October and I had about 50 hours on the engine. I was surprised to see that much of the paint was still adhering to the prop and shaft with only a bit of flaking from the surface of the prop blades. The barnacles were confined to the shaft and hub of the prop. We sail and cruise in the Barnegat Bay region of New Jersey in mostly salt water. The marina where we keep the boat is on Forked River where the water is a bit brackish but the barnacles seem to love it. The paint ($30) and primer ($20) are a bit pricey but a can of each will last for three or more seasons.
