One World Penalty

As a Kiwi I am of course hoping the New Zealand can hold on to the America's Cup! I was very surprised, however, at the apparent severity of the penalty levied by the Arbitration Panel gainst the One World syndicate earlier today, that is a one point deduction in the semi-finals, the finals, AND in the America's Cup races (should they advance that far), plus costs of $65,000. The effect is that One World must win 5 of 7 races each time to advance. From what I have read, the penalty was assessed based on One World's admission that a designer had in his "possesion" an old 486 computer that had some old Team New Zealand design information, and discovered a Zip disk with other old design info. The claim was that the information had never been used; the computer was stored in a garage and the disk was recently found in a desk drawer. We will never know the facts of what was actually discussed in the closed hearings, but it does seem very harsh. The politics of the America's Cup are alive and well, and in the capable hands of the New York Yacht Club (and Dennis Conner)! My own view is that the cup REALLY has now made a transition to big money. I am really disappointed by the mass exodus of the old Team New Zealand members to the big budget campaigns. I understand that the original deed was for "friendly competition between nations", and while the word "friendly" has been in doubt for many years, the "national" part of it seems to have gone out the window as well. I would like to see only citizens of the nations represented by the syndicates in the design team as well as the crew. New Zealanders form a very significant fraction of many of the syndicates this time around. Enough. Marge and I get on a plane on Thursday to fly to NZ. We get off the plane in Auckland on Saturday morning, and if the semi-finals are still going, we get on a boat for one or two days of race watching. Then down to Wellington for some sailing with my brother and Xmas with the family. Life is good... Derek

A couple of pertinent facts

Derek, there are a couple of facts regarding the One World case that casts it in a slightly different light. In addition to having the old computer and disks used in designing the boats used by the Kiwis in the last Americas Cup, Ian Mitchell of One World also admitted under oath that he had made copies of the files after being ordered to return the computer to Team New Zealand, and had in one case printed out design schematics and given them to the One World boat design team to use as a template for their own boat design. Thus, there was an attempt by at least one member of One World to break the rules. This does not mean the entire One World team is at fault, which is likely why the rule committee pulled its punch. According to the rules, the proven violation could have resulted in complete disqualification. One World still gets to compete, but I think this is actually an effective "shot across the bow" that is consistent with your own wishes: That Americas Cup competition returns more to a sportsmanlike competition and de-emphasizes the "win at all costs" attitude that developed over the last couple of decades. Also, for what it's worth, Dennis Conner withdrew the New York Yacht Club protest prior to the hearing, indicating that he felt the spirit of competition was being impeded by too many rules protests. Good luck to all racers. However, I am still bewildered by the possibility of a land-locked nation becoming a sailing power and defending Americas Cup country!

Who Cares?

I agree with you about the state of affairs in the America's Cup. Perhaps I am just an old fart, but it is now down to who has the most money to buy technology, crew, spin or whatever regardless of nationality. It is no longer a friendly competition between countries but rather a year round industry which creates more a race for the money rather than the cup. I have a few Kiwi relatives who seem to be just as turned off as I am but I am sure if NZ retains the cup I will hear no end of it but unfortunately I no longer care. Aother example of "progress".

One World

I agree that is should be a national contest, with nationals only on a team, and perhaps only that nations components and labor in the boats! It would be nice to have non-commercail boat, i.e., no overt corporate sponsorship, but that would be too much to expect. Perhaps it could be run like an Olympics, with qualifying races for a national team. On the penalty, I think One World should have just been thrown out. Dennis Conner said "in the old days if you broke the rules you got thrown out." The one point per round penalty is severe, but it hurts everyone, I think, by distorting the symmetry of the best of seven semi finals. And, the $65,000 "penalty," or fee is silly compared to the $100 Million syndicate budgets we are seeing this year. jv
