One tough Rub Rail

I have purchased a new rub rail replacement set from DR Marine for my 25'Oday. It consists of the holder and insert. The insert is not a problem since it rubber and soft in the heat. On the other hand, the holder is rigid ,feels like plastic and comes in a coil.It doesn't come with installation instructions and am unsure as to how to soften in order to mount.Any and all suggestions would be helpful.

Heat Gun

I replaced my rubrail on my O'Day 35 a few months ago. The holder, as you referred to it, came in 20' lengths so it may not be quite the same but it was hard plastic. I just unscrewed the old ones and screwed in the new ones. When I got to the bow and corners at the back, I heated the holder with my heat gun then gently bent them around the corner using a rubber mallet. If you try this, bend them gradually as not to distort them too much.

Lay out the rubrail first

I just did this to my Oday 222 (was my Oday, just sold it). It would help to lay out the rubrail first (from the coil position that it was shipped in) by using heavy objects to help flatten the rubrail. I had three pieces and I place eaxh of them on my patio using cinder blocks. I left them for the week and when I came back, the were not as coiled and it helped alot in the installation, plus also using the heat gun for the corners. I also used 5200 in each screw hole to seal them.Rob

Did you need to replace the "holder" as well as the rub rail insert, or could you have used the existing "holder"? I have an O35, and it appears the rub rail has shrunk where it meets at the stern. I was wondering if I have to replace the entire rubrail, even though it is in good condition everywhere except at the stern, where it isn't needed in any event.Ed Ryan

I replaced the holder completely. The existing ones were very brittle so I replaced all of them.
