The gelcoat on my Columbia 22 has given up the ghost and I am planning to repaint. I know the boat will never be worth much but I would like it to look nice and wonder if the added expense of two part polyurethane is worth the expense. I am planning on painting the hull a dark blue color so I think I want the better gloss that is promised with the two part paint.

I used the one part on a kells 23

and the boat moored next to me (a 27 footer) also used the one part. The two part requires two people. One to apply and the other to top off. Both types of paint require good prep. I rolled tho one part on with a small celled marine roller. Don't use anything but this. You also apply in one direction. Don't use a back and forth motion. I also did some topping off with a good quality foam brush. The 27 footer had someone spray the one part on. Very impressive done that way. I currently have a 27 hunter 1978 that I used Poliglo on. Great stuff. The shine is terrific and I think I will get almost two seasons out of it. A little on the pricey side, but easier than paint.

In The Same boat

I painted the deck and coach top on my Venture 24 last summer. Used Interlux and it came out nice. I was not experienced with painting; but the guys at Sextons Chandelry up on Hayden Island were a BIG help! Their prices are right too. Use Penetrol to cut it with and spray if you can or go for the roll on and feather approach which will take a lot more paint.

One Part

I have used the one part Marine paint from Home Depot. I have painted my tender with Dark Blue and the inside with white. The gloss is great and I am very happy with the results. I used the small foam roller, I agree with the previous response that this provides the best results other than sparying. I am not sure how well this will last but after 2 monthes in the Sun, it still looks great.

2 part Interlux Awl Grip.

A few years ago I painted my 1964 Rhodes 19. I wanted the same as you. A great gloss in a really dark blue a classic look. I searched and searched and found the best professional results (and$$) was Awl grip...By US PAINT.. I painted the boat by myself with a marine grade roller and tipped with a foam brush...You can spray but that set up was even more complicated...WHAT A JOB!...I sanded and sanded and sanded to get a great base. Then primed with a 2 part interlux Blister resistant primer. Then sanded again and again. Awl grip is a B*tch to work with...It starts as a 2 part paint then if the temperature is not just right you need and should use a brush reducer so thats part 3...it can be thin so has a tendincy to run and you have to keep moving and CANNOT Go back if you see a pot you missed....you will have to sand and paint that side again...The paint is exreamly temperature sensitive and will thin or thicken within a few degrees ..... I "painted" the boat in 1 day , 1 coat .( well 2 coats of primmer then 1 coat of paint. 1 day min dry time between each)..on jackstands in my backyard...and the sheen is incredible! However Awl grip is not as flexible as many other paints...so a bump on the hull or a miss with a fender could cause a hairline crack...or worse...the trailer roller hit the boat and chipped the finish......after 3 years if I had to paint it again I would use the same...but this time I would set up a tent to keep the bugs and any dust out....you would be amazed at whats floating in the air that just finds a way to gravitate towards a wet dark Blue boat........The color is actually Flag Blue....and West Marine no longer carries it you would have to go to Defender online..... if I were you I would find a 1 part epoxy base paint and give that one a try. and save some $$$....Also a note about Dark colors...I have heard that in the south the dark absorbs heat and boats with dark hull tend to be hotter in general than lighter colored boats...But on the Chesapeake I wasnt concerned with that. good luck and have fun!!
