Attn Peggy and other 340 owners. I have just bought a previously owned 340. The Jabsco head pumps out but won't pull in fresh water. Seems the bowl holes are clogged. So which option would you choose: a)New2me boat and now out of cash: fittle futz with the old head and overhaul it hoping to make it right. b)Damn the torpedoes and order a whole new Jabsco head from West Marine while they are 30% off and bolt it right up-(did that on the old 29.5) c)NO QUARTERS! Buy a brand spanking new PH-II and be done with it! But will the PH-II fit in the 340 with MINIMAL effort? (Peggy, that is the head you recommended wasn't it). Everybody chime in and let me know what you KNOW not what you THINK!

Choices

Andy, I put a standard PH-II on my last boat and felt it was worth every penny when compared to the less expensive alternatives. My H34 came with a Groco head that replaced the original installation. It's huge by comparison (and very expensive too) but the Admiral thinks it's wonderful.

Second Thoughts

Try making up a shore water hose connection to the hose that feeds the head and hook it to a bucket like you were going to winterize it. Put cleaning materials in the bucket and pump it through the head--Peggy Hall can recommend what to use. A good cleaning and maybe a rebuild kit could stave off a more expensive replacement.

Jabsco Experience - FWIW

Andy, I have had considerable experience (8 yrs) with the Jabsco in my 1997 h340 and have gotten very good at fixing it... I should have taken Peggy's excellent advice but no I have continued to repair the Jabsco compact head. Last year my head would not pump in seawater. It turned out to be the intake valve was not seating and was leaking by. The lever that controls dry-bowl - wet-bowl was left all winter in the dry bowl position pushing up on the rubber valve. (Recommended when on board with the thru-hull valve open)The lever pushes up on the rubber valve when in the dry-bowl position and the rubber valve material got a set in it and would not lay down flat and seal when the lever was moved to wet-bowl. I bought a rebuild kit, (about $40) used the rubber valve assembly and that cured my problem. Be very careful not to overtighten the six screws that hold the top of the pump assembly on the body of the pump. I am embarrassed to say I have now bought 2 new Jabsco heads on sale in the past 8 years to use for parts to keep my head working. When I total what I have spent counting the rebuild kit and some other parts I bought directly from Jabsco, I could have bought a good new head. I keep a complete spare pump assembly on board ready to go, along with a variety of spare parts. I have 2 spare unused bowls with seats home in my garage.

Fwiw, guys...

Andy posted the same question here AND in the Head Mistress forum--and if y'all just skimmed through the posts in the last 24 hours, as I do,instead of limiting your online participation to just a few forums you'd know that...AND prob'ly see a lot more subjects to which you have something to contribute or learn from. In fact, if I ONLY read the HM forum, I'd miss at least half of the "pottie" posts! I'm not gonna post every reply twice...so I suggest you read the HM forum if you want to keep up the conversation.
