Rubber parts and Time
The shaft log, as usually referred to, is the frp tube that the shaft passes thru from outside to inside. The shaft should not contact it. Problem is that as the mounts age, the engine settles down lower and at some point the shaft can start rubbing against the inside of the frp tube.
The rear mounts take the most weight and, while, in theory, spec'd out for that load, can still collapse at some point.
Four years ago we decided to R&R all our mounts on our '88 model boat with about 2000 hours. No oil or water leaks around the engine and all looked fine.
When we got the two rear mounts out (interesting struggle...) we found that both sides were collapsed down to metal-on-metal.
That explained why we had observed the shaft sitting a little "low" as it entered the boat from the tube where the PSS bellows is clamped on. Our shaft did not abrade the inside of the tube, but was within a smidgen of doing so.
If you get a lot of years (15+) and hours of use (1500+) on that diesel, replace those mounts and check out the whole alignment situation.
Regards,
L
