I have very limited knowledge of my Universal diesel other than how to change filters and water pump impellers. Can anyone recomend a good book or books covering diesel maintenance? I am trying to put together a good library of sailing material and so far all I have is my Chapmans Piloting and Seamanship.

Calder's Boatowner's Manual for Mechanical and Electrical Systems is a must-have.

For your engine, in addition to the manuals, the www.marinedieseldirect.com website has enough information that you may not need to buy anything. Also, many other association websites have lotsa information on engines. Try our www.c34ia.org, click on "Manuals" on the left side and see if you need anything else (for M25 to M35 engine series).
