One Boat - Two Keels

I want to purchase a 40' race cruiser. She draws almost 8' and that's no good for cruising...especially in the Carribean. The boat is available with the deep keep for racing and also a more shallow version, I think 5'10". Any comments on getting a second keel for the year that we go away cruising and then switch is back to the deep one when we return for my racing. I never actually got a price for the backup keel, but I am sure Mars in Canada can also price one along with Beneteau. Also, what might it cost to actually do the switch..(remove and attach/rebed the other)? Sound like a crazy idea?

Modify the existing keel.

Garret: You may want to think about modifying the existing keel. Mars Metals has engineers there that can do the design for you too. I have seen this done in one of the sailing mags a couple of years ago. They cut the told one with a chain saw and the drill and bolted the new appendage on.

Do you realize that you are talking about 2'2"? Are those 26" so critical for cruising in the Caribbean? Not sarcasm, a true question. As for mods, Mars can make you a torpedo bulb that bolts on to the bottom of your current keel that can be modified by removing however many inches you need.

Thanks...

Alan, your are correct. I never thought about having a retrofit to our existing keel. Switch the the deep for a torpedo bulb. Smart idea. Thanks
