Once upon a vibration

A few years back I started to have vibration when motoring along; So I started by aligning the engine to the best of my ability; no change. I then change the engine mounts who where quite old and then align the engine again : no change. I then change the cutlass bearing and while I had the shaft remove, I had it check to be sure it was strait; it was not so I got a new one made of stainless instead of brass. This will take care of the problem for sure ; still the same vibration. So this winter I bit the bullet and bought myself a 3 blade feathering/reversing pitch prop ( J-PROP )and I am please to say that after launch and tryng to induce vibration in any possible way, I no longer have a vibration problem. As a bonus, I can now back out of my slip and send the stern where I want it to go and not where IT want to go. Lot's of money but worth every penny( I should say DOLLAR ). Yves s/v OPIUM

Turning Vibes

I get the strangest vibration/knocking noise when turning the boat while motoring. Already have a folding prop, new cutlass bearing, aligned motor mounts. Meanwhile, the mystery continues.

Rick set up a guest register

Rick I enjoyed your site. Read every word on your 2002 trip. Good reading. I wanted to sign a guest register. craig

Thanks Craig

I'll have to figure out how to put a register thingy in. I built the site on the cheap using a MS Publisher program I already had. You know us teachers be poor, poor, poor. I'll be doing a big update of the site in July because ... ta-da!... we're leaving to for the Keys and Tortugas again next week for a month. Yippee! Zippidee doo dah! (Can you you tell I'm excited?) Anyway, Check the site again in July as I'll have put in the log for that trip as well as a photo page of the projects/upgrades we've done. Oh yeah, hey Michael, I had a rattle like you have that I traced to a spot where the floor interior liner makes contact with the hull but isn't bonded. The prop balance took most of it out but I still get it occasionally. I'm going to drill some tiny holes and pump in some epoxy to try to bond it. I'll let you know if it works. Probably won't be until July though :) Don't know if that's what you've got going on but you might check.

Rattle Pan

The idea about checking the area where the pan liner meets the hull is a good one! On the H'31, that location is very close to the round handle on the raw water intake valve. On my boat, the liner is now very close to touching that handle and somehow I doubt that it's supposed to be that tight. I plan to take the cushion and wood support off and watch that area while turning under way and see if that's the site of the mysterious knock/vibration.
