Onboard internet

I'm a good bit too old to be a natural in this computer age at much of the tech stuff. My wife is the ultimate failure of her generation at this stuff, too.
For years we have successfully used the Bullet to acquire internet here in the West Indies, but it seems those days are nearing an end. Most of the internet providers for cruisers have gone under because the islands cannot (or will not) supply these providers with the bandwidth(?) they need to supply a good signal to the boats.
One of the last internet providers in the islands is so frustrated that he may also pull out, leaving us with nothing.
Therefore we are seeking an alternative. Phone based data systems become very expensive for anything more than a few emails a day. Satellite systems are also way beyond our means. Going ashore with a device and paying to use the internet (ec$12.00 average for a few minutes) in a cafe is an expensive pain, though certainly necessary in hurricane season, if no signal is available on the boat.
Does anybody have any idea of what might be available that would supply internet anywhere (at anchor, not at sea), in every (or most) countries? Is there anything new that we haven't heard of down this way?
TA.

You'll get some good answers here, but if you go to cruisersforum and search for wifi, you'll find many other good answers, too. More of them are out of the country than on this forum. In general, phone based hotspots for connectivity seems to be the answer. Good luck.

Ditto on the phone hot spots

that sorta makes it limited i would think
The question would have to be asked: limited to what?

The old days are over: no more unsecured wifis; limited bandwidth on accessible free spots, combined with free spots being oversubscribed; low strength of free spots; streaming Netflix deprived dockmates from any signal...the list is endless. "Free spots" meaning legally open to those who choose to connect to the service.

woody, what we're seeing is a slow but inexorable sea change in the methods of communications. It is changing from "broadcast" wifi to BYOW: bring your own wifi. :)

It's unlimited only to phone coverage, and most people stick within phone coverage. Heck, even in the Bahamas, the local phones with sim cards are affordable and folks use them. You might remember Sumner's trip?

If you're seriously offshore, the "model" changes.

For coastal cruisers, it's not so bad, and actually, the signals and comms continuity is vastly improved.

BYOW. Gee, I coined a new one in addition to

Your boat, your choice. :)

I won't copyright this one either. :):):)

One might also check in with Active Captain who have written some good comms "whitepapers" and also look in on www.panbo.com.

Another good resource is www.cruisersforum.com, search on "wifi" and read away.

that would make some tethered to the ability of their provider and their reach ...so it looks like if you want coverage you have to get something like the spots or whatever that other device is...... inreach i think it is ......i am hopeing that sat phones will someday be in the same game as cell phones ...but i may not live long enough to see that happen...so it just may be one needs to have a HAM system onboard to really go any distance ...lol my insurance coverage is broader than my phone can call off shore...lol....this almost sounds like the book ...A Man Without A Country ....

woody, you're actually talking about two different things.

1. wifi service which, by definition, is based on phone/internet service

2. offshore comms

I'll have a phone with a sims card and use the BaTelco towers when I go back to the Bahamas but used my long distance wifi on the trip and was without for a couple weeks once and sometimes had really slow service. With the long distance you can still pickup some places that don't secure their service, such as some motels and Home Depot and some public hot spots and yes some people still don't secure their service and some don't intentionally a couple places I've been. I don't watch netflix on any of those and probably couldn't on most. I'll check email and maybe post on here or do a trip report.

The yard where the Endeavour is has kept updating their equipment fairly frequently so that those of us that stay on our boats there can have things like Netflix. We appreciate that :dancing:

yes i know that but thank you for pointing that out ....i remember somewhere in the past post something about a spot like device that also where you could do email messages on it...but not internet .....and that seems to be about as good as it gets for now ...unless you purchase that expensive sat internet service....back in 93 i was troubleshooting a private elevator on the south carolina coast (pawleys island) on a bag phone and in one week had a $1000.00 phone bill due to a micro managing employer and the manufacture of the product even though they picked up the tab ...i don't ever want to see a phone bill like that again ...these things tend to make you pucker up in the wallet when the statement has your personal name on them...so i am always looking for an economical way to use the net and phone that has good connections.....without going to the free phone tent at the local 7/11....
